Food Sovereignty Sanctuary is a 508(c)(1)(a) religious mission devoted to restoring right relationship between the land, the people, and the Creator on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi.
We recognize ʻāina (land) as sacred, a living trust entrusted to us. We affirm that access to pure, life-giving food—grown in harmony with natural law, free from harmful chemicals, pesticides, GMOs, and synthetic genetic technologies—is a Creator-given birthright. To care for the land is to care for one another. To grow food is to participate in divine provision.
Before foreign systems reshaped these islands, Hawaiʻi fed its people through regenerative stewardship, loko iʻa, loʻi kalo, and cooperative labor rooted in kuleana and aloha ʻāina. In partnership with Puna Rising, we stand in the knowing that Hawaiʻi was food sovereign—and can be food sovereign again.
Our mission is to end hunger by restoring knowledge. We educate, equip, and walk alongside families so they may grow their own organic food, reclaim practical skills, and rebuild abundance at the household level. Through hands-on training, seed sharing, and community gatherings, we cultivate resilience of body, mind, and spirit.
Through our Luna-Chicks program—because we are joyfully devoted to raising chicks for eggs—we help families reconnect with daily provision.
We believe every ʻohana with a yard should experience the blessing, responsibility, and delight of caring for hens that provide fresh eggs. In tending a flock, children learn stewardship. Families learn rhythm. The land becomes teacher.
Luna-Chicks provides:
Affordable, high-quality egg-laying chicks and pullets to families across the Big Island
Scholarships to assist with start-up costs for backyard flocks
Online and in-person workshops teaching humane, sustainable flock care
Each hen placed in a backyard is a step toward independence from imported systems and a return to localized nourishment.
Food Sovereignty Sanctuary promotes and defends the sacred right of all people to raise, grow, exchange, and sell organic food in harmony with natural and divine law. We gather monthly in fellowship, sharing food and intention, remembering that none of us is an island unto ourselves.
Many hands make light work.
In aloha and kuleana, together we grow. 🌺🌿
